In Pic: Ram JethmalaniNew Delhi: Controversies surrounding BJP do not seem to end as disgruntled party member Ram Jethmalani on Thursday called Hindu Lord Ram a bad husband. He made these remarks during a book launch here, which would likely cause more embarrassment to the saffron party. Talking to the audience, Jethmalani said that Ram was a bad husband as he sent his wife Sita to exile for no definite reason.

“If you are prepared for the unconditional eternal slavery while you live, as Sita claimed from Ram. Ram was a very bad husband incidentally. I don't like him at all. Just because some fisherman said something, he sent that poor woman (Sita) into a vanvaas (exile). Bad," Jethmalani said.

Jethmalani further went on to say that Ram’s brother Lakshman made excuses to bring back Sita from Raavan’s den.

“Lakshman was even worse. When Sita was abducted by Raavan, Ram asked him to go find her as she was abducted during his custody. Lakshman was a clever chap and simply excused himself by saying she was his sister-in-law and he never looked at her face, so he wouldn't be able to identify her. So these are the tricks which humans continue to play because after all they were trying to rescue a woman,” he said.

The 89-year-old advocate is currently upset with the BJP  and has been staunchly demanding the resignation of party president Nitin Gadkari over "dubious" funding of his company. On Wednesday he went on to say that he will carry on his fight against the BJP president but will not quit the party. His son Mahesh Jethmalani quit the BJP’s national executive as he was unwilling to work under Gadkari’s leadership.

Gadkari earlier this week faced flak for comparing Swami Vivekanad and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim by saying that “the both had same IQ levels.”

VHP working president Praveen Togadia slammed Jethmalani and asked him to take back his statement by apologising to the nation.

“He is daring to abuse Lord Ram because of Hindus’ tolerant attitude. I challenge him to say the same about Prophet Muhammad. He should apologise to the nation,” Togadia said.

Reacting sharply to Jethmalani's statements, Bhartiya Sant Samaj president Acharya Pramod Krishnan said: “I don’t know what has happened to BJP leaders. On one hand BJP is claiming to make Ram Mandir and on the other hand it is insulting Lord Ram. Their national leader compares Swamy Vivekananda and Dawood Ibrahim in same weighing scale."

Krishnan demanded an apology from Jethmalani as he felt that the remarks have hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus in the country.

“I think he (Ram Jethmalani) has gone mad in this age. He should put his name as Raavana Jethmalani instead of Ram Jethmalani .We condemn this statement. Feelings of crores of people have been hurt. I demand that he should apologise to the nation .Ram is god of Indians,” he added.
