Palghar Sena unit chief Bhaskar Sankhe has been also arrested. Rapid Action Force has been deployed as a preventive measure in the area.

21-year-old, Shaheen Dadh posted:“With all respect, everyday, thousands of people die, but still the world movies on. Just due to one politician died a natural death, everyone goes bonkers. They should know we are resilient by force, not by choice. When was the last time, did anyone showed some respect or even a two-minute silence for Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Azad, Sukhdev or anyone of the people because of whom we are free-living Indians? Respect is earned, given and definitely not forced. Today Mumbai shuts down due to fear, not due to respect.”

Shaheen, who was arrested after she posted comments, said police was polite to her and she had no complaints against any police personnel."I have apologised for the post," she said, adding she had no comments to offer on whether she had done anything wrong.

The girl who posted the status has now deactivated her Facebook account and says hurting anybody was never their intention.The two now fear for their and their families' safety.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena in Thane said that the girls' arrest was justified as it was considered offensive against the founder of their party.

“25 lakh Shiv Sainiks gave tribute to Balasaheb very peacefully. But if someone used a social networking platform to disturb the law and order situation then the police has the right to take action,” said Sanjay Raut to ABP News.

Abdul Dhada, whose clinic was ransacked, said, "For our security they have posted the police because what has gone wrong should not happen again...we don't have any complaint against anybody and treatment we received from the police station is absolutely fine".

"Balasaheb Thackeray is our God. We will not tolerate any offensive comments against him. No Shiv Sainik and no Marathi Manoos will remain silent. The police knows who was behind the Facebook comment. The arrest is justified," Prabhakar Raul, Rural District Head, Shiv Sena, Thane.

Slamming the police, Arvind Kejriwal said: "Police officers who arrested the two girls in Mumbai shud be immediately dismissed. That's minimum that the govt ought to do."

There was a massive outrage in the country over the arrest of the women.

"It looks like policing done under pressure. If police went overboard what about court, they could have immediately provided bail," Kiran Bedi said. 

Maharashtra Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal on Monday ordered a probe into the arrest of a 21-year-old girl and her friend for posting comments on a social networking website on the shutdown in Mumbai after Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's death.

"An inquiry has been ordered in the case and a report will be submitted by the inspector general of the Konkan range Saturday," Dayal said.

Thane rural police Sunday arrested Shaheen Dadha for questioning the shutdown in the city after Thackeray's death Saturday, and the subsequent shutdown Sunday for his funeral and cremation.

Another girl in Dadha's friends' list, who 'liked' the comment, was also arrested.

Press Council of India Chairman  Monday criticised the arrests in strong words and requested Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to suspend the official who arrested the girls.

"I received an email stating that the woman has been arrested for protesting on Facebook against the shutdown in Mumbai on the occasion of the death of Mr. Bal Thackeray. It is alleged that she has been arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments," Katju wrote.

Katju said that it was absurd to say that protesting against a bandh hurt religious sentiments.

He said if no action was taken he would "deem it that you as chief minister are unable to run the state in a democratic manner as envisaged by the constitution to which you have taken oath, and then the legal consequences will follow".

He wrote a second email to Chavan later and sought an explanation as to why there was no response to his previous message.

Reports here said that both the girls were booked and arrested under Section 295(a) of the Indian Penal Code (for hurting religious sentiments) and Section 64(a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

A man was arrested in Tamil Nadu for allegedly targeting Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son on Twitter.

The section used against the businessman is the same that Mamata Banerjee had used against professor Ambikesh Mahapatra earlier this year.

In September, cartoonist Trivedi was arrested for allegedly putting up banners mocking the Constitution during a rally of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare in Mumbai late last year and posting the same on his website.
