New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable who was injured in the Sunday violence at India Gate during protests against gangrape of a girl died today, police said. Subhash Chand Tomar (47) breathed his last at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital this morning. He was on ventilator since his admission in the hospital.
"With deep regret we have to inform you Ct Subhash Chand Tomar succumbed to his injuries at 6.40AM today," Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar tweeted.
He was posted in Karawal Nagar area and was called for maintaining law and order at India Gate area during the protest on Sunday.He was found lying injured on Tilak Marg and was rushed to hospital.He succumbed to injuries early morning.
Tomar, a graduate, hailed from Sahapur Borali, Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. He had joined Delhi Police in 1989.
Eight persons have been arrested in connection to this particular case at Tilak Marg police station. and the police had registered an attempt to murder case for injuries caused to constable Subhash Tomar.
Arvind Kejriwal has tweeted, "Second 307 - attempt to murder- imposed on a young boy, Chaman. He was protesting at India Gate yesterday. (sic)". Chaman is among the eight who have been held.
As a mark of respect, the Delhi Police decided that all personnel will donate one day's salary to Tomar's family.
A senior police official said murder charges will be now added to the case.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, has written to Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde asking for an independent inquiry into SDM of Vasant Vihar, Usha Chaturvedi's allegation that senior Delhi police officers tried to interfere with the crucial process of recording the statement of the 23-year-old medical student who was gangraped on a moving bus in Delhi last week.
