Ranchi: Twenty four hours after he used a khukuri to murder Khusboo Kumari, supposedly the love of his life, Bijendra Prasad has realised that he has committed a huge mistake. Now, he simply wants to die in jail.
"Let the court hang me or award me life imprisonment. I am not worried. I have committed a huge mistake and do not want to save myself at any cost. I will neither appoint any lawyer nor file any bail application in court. I just want to live and die in jail," he told The Telegraph, while waiting in a van with six armed policemen keeping watch.

Bijendra — he doesn't spell his name with a V, according to records of RD Tata Technical Education Centre in Jamshedpur where he studies — was about to leave for Birsa Munda Jail where he would be on 14-day remand as ordered by a district court for the cold blooded murder of Khusboo on the campus of St Xavier's College, Ranchi, Wednesday evening.
Still in the red T-shirt he was wearing last night, Bijendra was wearing blue trousers and black shoes. A blue towel covered his face. "I do not want to live any more. After killing my beloved I was looking for an isolated place to commit suicide. But before I could get there, students of St Xavier's overpowered me," he said, repeating what he had told a section of the media on Wednesday at Apollo Hospital.
"I would have been happy had they killed me on the spot. I do not want to come out of jail," he added, removing the towel from his face for fresh air. Bijendra, who wasn't accompanied by any family member in court, has clarified he did not want any legal defence in court. Nor would he seek bail. During the less-than-five-minute conversation with The Telegraph, he spoke softly and coherently. Yet some of his replies were contradictory.
Why did you do it?
"Do not compel me to recall bad things."
But she was your friend?
"I think I was possessed by madness… All I wanted was to live and die together with my beloved."
Are you thinking of your family, especially your sisters?
"I have stopped thinking about others and I just want to end my life. I am not in a position to think of all these things. Now, I have to look after myself only. Kindly do not ask me such things." Bijendra said he had left his home in Jamshedpur on Wednesday morning by bus. He was carrying the weapon with him and no one stopped him at St Xavier's College.
Today, he seemed all alone. Apart from the six policemen, he had two other petty criminals for company — Lower Bazar residents Jafar Alam and Sanju being taken to jail for power theft.
